Brother Soldier.
call to duty tears him
from his family,
fighting war he causes not
separate him from society
he loves best,
defending indefensible
most times
disconnect him from
the loved ones
maintaining imaginary
“peace”
elsewhere creates void
at home
at sea he becomes
neighbor to marine lives
in the air befriend starry
heavens
on land-hostile terrains-
he struggles to survive
as he battles nostalgia
depression immediate
companion,
fatigue and trauma
siblings that live with
him in war front
accidents become
part of his daily life,
horror-his heart records-
everyday
if fortunate-he comes home-
with lost limb, hand, or
fingers
if less fortunate-mind and
sensory facilities-damaged
to
booms, booms, booms of
artillery, bombs,
missiles,
grenades, land mines, tanks
if unfortunate-
coffin-draped-in-national-colors-
transporting vehicle home
after last kisses
fatherhood-he may not
know-
fatherless children and
widow
he may leave behind
worse still-abode may be-
in a cenotaph-
remembered with mere
EPITAPH.
